Review: The YA Chronicles: Volume Two - Time and Time Again

My second YA Chronicles box finally arrived in the mail! I was a bit worried for the owners of the business when one of their items got held up in customs, causing the box to be sent out late, but the boxes were sent out and this one was certainly magical. For some strange and unknown reason, the boxes have been taking two weeks to get to me, even though they're shipped from Sydney and I'm in Auckland NZ. Trying to avoid spoilers was impossible. I will probably never say this again, but thank goodness for spoilers! I was definitely weighing up whether or not to sign up for November's box, but when I saw what was in this one, I raced to sign up for the next one.

This month's box had the theme "Time and Time Again", and you can actually see in my last post that I wished for something Doctor Who related (you'll have to keep reading if you want to find out whether or not I was right!)

The first item that I'm going to talk about is the Time Turner (which is a replica from the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and is completely amazing. I have a plastic Time Turner that I collected from those little square box things in 2008, it's cool but it definitely isn't something I'd wear for fear of it breaking. This necklace however, is super sturdy and really beautiful. Anything that I can add to my ever growing pile of Harry Potter merchandise is a complete win for me. I think this might be my favourite item from the box.

Next up was a TARDIS journal! (Yeah, I guessed Doctor Who item and was totally right) Ever since seeing River Song with this journal I have wanted... no, needed one. What surprised me was that it's actual licensed merchandise, so that made it even more special for me. I think it'll be one of those journals you put in the 'too pretty or cool to write in' category.

These 'Timeless Hearts' wax melts from Bandles on Etsy smell AMAZING. I was a tiny bit worried that they'd taint the book, they didn't, they did, however, give my bookmark (which comes with every YA Chronicles box) a great smell. There are four melts in the pack that are champagne and strawberries, strawberry shortcake, gourmet vanilla and creme caramel scented (they smell edible, but I don't recommend attempting to eat them...) I have a soy/wax burner, so I cannot wait to give these a go!

I was so, so, so, so very excited when I saw the book that was in this month's box. I'd seen ARC copies floating round on Tumblr for the past couple of months and was going to buy it when I saw it in Unity books but am so glad that I didn't! The book did have a couple of really, really minor imperfections (the cover was a teeny bit peeled on the spine, but I'm just crazy about book perfection and am in no way complaining) but it's beautiful and looks amazing on my shelf.

The synopsis for The Next Together by Lauren James is this:

"Katherine and Matthew are destined to be born again and again, century after century. Each time, their presence changes history for the better, and each time, they fall hopelessly in love, only to be tragically separated.
Spanning the Crimean War, the Siege of Carlisle and the near-future of 2019 and 2039 they find themselves sacrificing their lives to save the world. But why do they keep coming back? What else must they achieve before they can be left to live and love in peace?
Maybe the next together will be different...
A powerful and epic debut novel for teenagers about time-travel, fate and the timelessness of first love. The Next Together is told through a mixture of regular prose, diary entries, letters, "original" historical documents, news reports and internet articles."

Also included, but not pictured, was a letter from the author, which was really interesting to read!

I definitely enjoyed this month's box and like I said earlier, I've signed up for November's already and will most likely be signing up for Decemeber's box as well (who can resist all these goodies for such a reasonable price!) Also included in each box is a YA Chronicles bookmark, with the same colour scheme as the informational card and the theme written on the back. I also bought an extra one for $3.99 (which you can do as well!) to show my support of the business.

If you're wondering about The YA Chronicles (as you should be!) they're a Young Adult subscription service run by two amazing book bloggers in Sydney, Australia where "Every month we try to find a book with as diverse a cast of characters as possible (because representation is important), great writing (because how else will you fall into a story?) and exciting plot (to get your heart pumping)." (from their website). Each box is $29.99AUD + shipping, which varies, and includes a YA paperback book, 2-5 bookish goodies AND a TYAC bookmark.
