Review: September 'Darkness' OwlCrate

It's OwlCrate time! Yes, it's that time again, one of my favourite times of the month and definitely one of the most exciting mail days! It's time for me to share with you what was inside the latest OwlCrate box. As usual, I've waited until OwlCrate have unboxed theirs to post my unboxing so that I avoid any spoilers.

For those of you wondering what the heck OwlCrate is, let me fill you in! OwlCrate is a monthly YA subscription service that caters to those who just cannot get enough Young Adult literature and goodies in their lives. Each box contains one US edition, hardcover copy of a new release YA book, a special edition OwlCrate pin (this is a new feature and is insanely amazing, I'll talk more about that soon), 3-5 bookish goodies (items like bookmarks, totes, candles, journals, etc), and some bookish swag! The boxes are $29.99USD each + shipping (there's a coupon code at the bottom of this review) and there's the option to sign up to 3 and 6 month subscriptions.

The theme for September was 'Darkness' and this is as close as OwlCrate is going to get to a Halloween box this year, I'm so thrilled to have my hands on it.

Now, let me show you what was inside!

The first item is this candle made by The Melting Library, and it's an OwlCrate exclusive! It's called Celaena's Cake and is supposed to honour our favourite assassin's (Celaena from the Throne of Glass series) love of cake. To me, the candle smelled like coconut, but apparently I'm the only one to feel this way (typical me, hahaha), to everyone else it smells like marzipan. The candle is so gorgeous and well packaged, I adore it!

Next up we had something really special! This canvas pouch was designed by Out Of Print, one of my favourite bookish merchandise stores, and it's insanely amazing quality. I believe it's official merchandise, on the front is the title for 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' and on the back is a quote from 'Hollow City' (Miss Peregrine's #2) that reads: "Strange, I thought, how you can be living your dreams and your nightmares at the very same time." Which is an amazing quote.

Earlier this year, my book club, The Booklanders, chose to read the first book at our very first meeting and most really enjoyed it. When I heard that there was going to be an item inspired by the books in this OwlCrate I freaked out.

This bath bomb, made by Da Bomb, was the following thing I pulled out of the box, that's supposed to represent the psychics from 300 Fox Way (The Raven Cycle series) and it's quite an awesome concept! It's berry scented, with an answer to a yes or no question inside. How flipping awesome is that?! I'm saving my bath bomb for now, but will be sure to edit this review with my thoughts once I've used it.

This exclusive item, designed by Evie Bookish, is inspired by the Six of Crows duology, was the next item. The bookmark is absolutely stunning, double sided, and excellent quality! I haven't read either book yet, but it was awesome to have an item in honour of the release of Crooked Kingdom in the box!

This little book is 36 pages long and is apparently part of a serialised novel called ReMade by Matthew Cody, Kiersten White, E.C. Myers, Andrea Phillips, Carrie Harris, and Gwenda Bond. This is the first installation and the rest can be read online, I believe.  Here's the synopsis:

"You live. You love. You die. Now RUN.
Every minute, 108 people die.
On October 14th, 2016, from 9:31-9:32pm. EDT, 23 of those deaths will be teenagers. Now they are humanity's last hope for survival.
Awakened in a post-apocalyptic work and hunted by mechanical horrors, these teens search for answers amidst the ruins of civilisation. Fate, love, and loyalty face off in this adrenaline-pumping YA adventure."

Another little sampler thing we got was this 'Passport' for P.C. Cast's upcoming novel Moon Chosen! Inside are a few colouring pages and an excerpt of the book.

Earlier in the review I mentioned the badges and now there's no need for any more suspense, haha. Since the August box, OwlCrate have decided to include a new feature to their boxes. An exclusively designed badge is added to each of the boxes, with the photo being taken from the information/spoiler card that is included in each box. On the edge of the pin it tells you which OwlCrate the pin came from. I think this is such a neat idea, especially since the cards have various art styles and images on them, I can't wait to collect them.

Onto the book for September! The book that was included was one that I was so looking forward to getting and that's Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake, here's the synopsis from Goodreads:

"Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest."

Epic reads also did an amazing video for the book and you can watch that here!

This book is so insanely beautiful with its deckled edges and stunning maps, if you haven't grabbed a copy already, make sure you do!

The last items we received were book swag, consisting of a signed bookplate (not pictured), exclusive fortune teller, and letter/map from the author (complete with epic doodles).

That's it for this September OwlCrate review! I really adored this box, I'd say it's definitely in my top 5 all time favourites, but I'm also really, really, looking forward to the October OwlCrate!

The October OwlCrate's theme is 'Once Upon a Time' and here's what OwlCrate has to say: "It will feature an awesome new book inspired by Russian folklore, and all about the magic that occurs in the middle of the night. It's a very atmospheric novel that's perfect for Halloween, without being too scary. As always, it will include a letter from the author, and there will also be a signed bookplate!
The box will also feature items inspired by Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz, and Sleeping Beauty. We've also announced that we'll be including an item from @whositswhatsits, which is valued at over $20! It's an item we've never sent before, and is perfect for chilly days. You won't want to miss it!"

If you want to sign up for the October OwlCrate (because look how awesome it's going to be!!!!!) then you can use the code BKWORM15 at checkout for 15% off your first box, or a gift order for a friend. Don't miss out, sign up today!
